by Alison Walker, Chris Kershaw and Sian Nicholas.
It quotes, page 69 under 'Violence': "Harassment, which
does not involve physical injury to the victim, accounted for
20 percent of police recorded violent crime in 2005/06. Police
recorded 245,337 harassment offences in 2005/06, 11 percent more
than in 2004/05. Some of this increase is due to increased recording
of offences that are being detected by means of a penalty notice
for disorder (see Chapter 8)".
That accounts only for those persons reporting their incidents
to the Police - many thousands feel unable to report their allegations.
This act demonstrates that stalking /harassment is pervasive
and indeterminable. Network for Surviving Stalking [NSS] is the
only registered charity in the UK specialising in supporting victims
of stalking/harassment. We are also at the forefront of raising
awareness in order to ensure that this is taken seriously. We
aim to provide support to victims, potential victims and others
affected by stalking/harassment, to raise awareness of the subject,
to provide information about stalking/harassment to professionals,
relevant agencies and the public.
Our three main objectives are:
| - |
to offer a range of support services to those
affected by stalking /harassment |
| - |
to contribute to public understanding of stalking /harassment
and its effects |
| - |
to support research into the effects and causes of stalking
/harassment |
Stalking /harassment affects thousands of people every year in
the UK. The 2006 British Crime Survey shows 1 in 10 women reported
being stalked. However, this also extends to men being victims.
